  • THE RACE

The Beer Lovers’ Marathon takes place in the city of Liege in Belgium. It is a road race of 42,195 km, limited to a maximum time of 6h30. This race mainly aims at being fun and accessible to any motivated sportsman.

In addition to conventional water and energy supply, all runners will have the opportunity to discover and taste 15 different belgian beers along the way (no obligation of course). Each stop will also be accompanied by a musical animation (fanfare, percussionists, DJs, …) in order to guarantee an unforgettable atmosphere and to motivate the marathon runners throughout their effort !

    THE ROUTE

Here below are the details of the route.

Important is to know that the first 10 Km are pretty hilly. We want to attrack your attention on two specific moments.

    1) The escalation of the Buren Stairs (famous in Liège). It’s a 374 steps stairway and climb 194 m. We recomend you not to run them but to enjoy the view on the city. Once on top of the strairs, the road continues to climb for 200m. Please remain at a slow pace!

    2) 3km after the Bueren stairs, you will run on the “Rue des Cotillages” that also ends with a steep 200m.

After that the route remains flat for the 30+ next kilomètres. Let us remind you once more that the total distance equals a real marathon, hence make sure to manage the effort all along that distance.

    THE THEME

The theme of the 2018 Beer Lovers’ Marathon is … FAR WEST !

    OUR VALUES

    SPORTPARTY, LOCAL PRODUCTS and CULTURE

Sport because, don’t underestimate it… running 42,195 km is tough!! It takes a lot of energy. An optimal training for a marathon is between 3 and 6 months and requires some sacrifices. But, what a satisfaction when you’ll cross the finish line. Those emotions are even more intense when they are shared with friends. An objective of the Beer Lovers’ Marathon is to motivate amateur runners to overcome the marathon distance and surpass yourself. Another one is to allow more experienced runners to share their passion by running in group with their friends. The Beer Lovers’ Marathon want to promote sports, sports for everyone, sports with friends, sports that make you laugh!

PARTY is everywhere all along the track. Runner party with each other, cheer for each other, laugh and chat with each other. It’s also the opportunity to meet people or to see a runner disguised as Batman having a beer with the Joker, or a hunter cheering-up Bambi!

And then, the audience, that will be there to help you when you need it, they will shout the “COME ON!!” when you feel tired.

And finally the party during the supply points, where all runners gather and share their opinion on a beer or on frites and then get caught in a farandole or start dancing on the beats of the DJ.

Local Products, eat well and drink well! Belgium is famous for its’ beers and food culture. The Beer Lovers’ Marathon is the chance to discover new tastes. 15 breweries will make you taste their best beers and you will go though the best of the local food specialities (yes… it’s not only about the waffles 🙂

Culture because you will pass by the most beautiful places of Liège (opera, Guilliemins train station, Prince-bishop palace,…). You will also run up the Buren Mountain, who got the title of “most extreme stairs of the world” according to the Huffington post. Yo will go thought the “Outre-Meuse”, the birth place of Tchanchès and UNESCO world heritage. You will pay your tribute to our king Albert 1st, the knight king and you will discover the landscape of Liège. It’s beautiful… but a bit hilly 🙂

Those values make the Beer Lovers’ Marathon a unique event where effort and happiness come together

    OUR HISTORY

From de Médoc to Liège, with a stop in Champagne

We came to the idea of organizing the Beer Lovers Marathon in 2012 during the Marathon du Médoc …

It was the first marathon for many of us and we really had a good time. Although it was 32°C, the costumes, the bands, the atmosphere and the tasting really helped us to finish this mythical distance with a smile on our face.

On our way back we asked ourselves” Why don”t we have a similar event in Belgium. We have a world reputation in folklore, chocolates, beer, waffles,  frites, etc. Shouldn’t we organize this at home?”. But due to lack of time and resources we didn’t go further.

We enjoyed the concept so much that the year after we took part in the “Champenoise”, a shorter race, but full of bubbles. There again we dreamed about organising this at home.

The project really took off on September 29th 2014, the day following our participation in the Berlin Marathon. We went to the fitness to do a bit of biking to relax our muscles and we meet a woman with a “Marathon du Médoc” T-Shirt. We start a conversation and… MIRACLE, she was the wife of one of the founder of the Marathon du Médoc. We immediately exchange our emails and then the great adventure began! Two founders, Michel and Bruno, invited us to meet them in Bordeaux for a weekend and explained us everything about the Marathon du Médoc. Thanks to their advices we could build a project file that we submitted to the city councillor for tourism in Liège. And after some months and a lot of work, the project was accepted!

Michel and Bruno came to run the BLM in 2016! It was an honour for us to welcome them!
